ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 15 Navy squash team suffered a 9-0 loss at the hands of No. 4 Yale on Saturday morning in Bancroft Hall. The Midshipmen dropped to 13-5 on the year, while the Bulldogs improved their mark to 8-1 on the campaign.
Facing the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, sophomore Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) lost in three games to Julian Illingworth in the No. 1 spot. After dropping the first game 9-1, Sawin battled Illingworth to 9-4 and 9-6 decisions in the final-two games.
Freshman Michael John Beautyman Jr. (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) also competed well for the Midshipmen on Saturday. Despite losing in three games, Beautyman Jr. responded after a 9-1 defeat in the opening game to Francis Johnson with close 9-6 and 9-7 games.
"We did play some good matches today," stated Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "Jeff (Sawin) played well against one of the top players in the nation. We had a strong match at the No. 6 spot today, as well."
Sophomore Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) forced Colin Campbell into a close contest during the second game at the No. 8 position. Following a 9-2 opening game setback, Hamilton just came up short on a 10-8 decision in the second game. Campbell won the third game by a score of 9-1 to win in three games.
The Midshipmen go back on the road tomorrow (Jan. 29) for a pair of contests in Haverford, Pa. Navy takes on Tufts at 10:30 a.m. before competing against host Haverford at 2 p.m.
