HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Navy squash team improved to 15-5 on the year with wins over Tufts and Haverford Sunday at Haverford College.
Navy survived an upset bid by 16th-ranked Tufts Sunday morning, as the Midshipmen earned a 5-4 win. Navy head coach Craig Dawson described Scott Hackman's (McLean, Va.) win as an "unbelievable comeback," as he fell behind 2-0 and faced four match balls. Hackman pulled out the win in five games, claiming 9-5, 10-8 and 9-3 wins in the in final three games. Seniors Dhruv parashar (Singapore) and Patrick Kruse (Annapolis, Md.) also earned wins for the Mids. Parashar earned a 3-0 victory over Kris Leetavorn at the No. 4 spot, while Kruse produced a 3-1 win over Nelson Schubart at No. 6. Sophomore Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) found himself down 2-0 against David Linz at the No. 9 position, but fought his way back to not only win the match in five games, but clinched the match with for Navy.
In the afternoon match, the Mids easily got by Haverford in a 9-0 sweep. Freshman Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) finished the day with a 2-0 mark after beating David Poolman, 3-0. Junior Dan Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) picked up a solid win at the No. 8 spot, defeating Marc Adelberg, 9-1, 9-1, 9-0. Hamilton, meanwhile, didn't allow a point to his foe, David Henry, at the No. 9 slot, earning a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 win. Sophomore Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) played before his hometown crowd with split results at No. 1. Sawin dropped a 3-1 decision to Tufts' Jake Gross, but bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Alex Salton of Haverford.
The Mids will return to action next weekend when they travel to three different schools in two days. Navy faces Rochester Friday (6:00 pm) before moving on to Hobart (10:00 pm) and Colgate (6:00 pm) Saturday.
