ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - John Zito scored a career-best 25 points as five UMBC players scored in double figures in a 95-82 win over Navy Tuesday night.
Also scoring in double figures for the Retrievers were Brian Hodges with 20 points, Jerrell Dinkins and Mike Housman with 14 points each, and Chris Pugh with 11 points. Jay Greene had 13 assists for the Retrievers, setting a school record for a freshman.
The Retrievers (5-7) snapped an 11-game road losing streak by shooting 58.5 percent from the floor, including 61.8 in the second half. Navy (6-6) was led by freshman Kaleo Kina's career-high 24 points.
Greg Sprink added 20 points and eight assists for the Mids, and Carlton Baldwin added 17 points. The Mids shot just 40 percent from the floor, but made 13 of 28 three-point attempts with Kina converting on 6 of 11 beyond the arc and Sprink 4 of 10. The teams were tied 40-40 after a close first half that featured five ties and five lead changes.
UMBC trailed 45-44 with 18:38 to play, but ran off 15 straight points to forge a 59-45 lead with 13:59 to play. Zito, who 18 second-half points, had six of the first eight points in the stretch. The Mids never got closer than nine points after that with the Retrievers leading by as many as 17, 85-68, with 6:19 to play.
Navy senior captain Matt Fannin injured his left knee in the first half and did not return to play.
