PALO ALTO, Calif. - Navy senior Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) finished 15th out of 124 runners during the 6,000-meter race as the Midshipmen placed ninth among 17 schools at the Stanford Invitational in women's cross country action on Saturday. Navy earned a fifth-place finish out of nine teams in the 4,000-meter event.
Saturday's meet represented Navy's first competition in the Golden State since 1990, when the Mids competed in the NCAA Division II Championship at Humboldt State.
Navy posted a team score of 184 points for its ninth-place tally in the 6,000-meter race and the Mids accumulated 105 points during the 4,000-meter race. Host Stanford, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USTFCCCA, claimed team titles in both races on Saturday.
Racing against several All-American runners, Whipple crossed the finish line in 21:18, 1:05 off of individual champion Arianna Lambie's time from Stanford. The senior has finished among the top-15 runners in each of her last-seven meets, while posting Navy's fastest time for her ninth-consecutive race.
Senior Emily Castro (Centennial, Colo.) placed 30th overall with a time of 22:00, followed by junior Kyleigh Millhouse's (Boiling Springs, Pa.) 45th-place 22:27 clocking, senior Allison Barlow's (Orange Park, Fla.) 22:34 showing for 50th place and senior Juliann Jordan's (Kanehoe, Hawai'i) 55th-place time of 22:43.
In the 4,000-meter event, freshman Kaitlin Baker (Rockford, Mich.) led the way for Navy with a time of 15:32 to land 25th out of 80 runners. Senior team captain Erin Demchko (Nanuet, N.Y.) immediately followed in 26th place with a time of 15:34, while junior Vicki Moore (Burke, Va.) came in 28th with a 15:36 showing, freshman Kayla Sax (Richland, Wash.) landed 29th with her 15:39 clocking and senior Susan Richardson (Louisville, Colo.) rounded out the scoring-five with a 15:41 effort to finish 32nd.
The Midshipmen will close out their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 14, with the Star Meet against Army on the USNA Cross Country Course. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., while the Alumni Open will follow at 10:45 a.m.
