ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Rachel Dougherty (Jr., Derwood, Md.) continued her strong offensive play of late by tallying 16 kills and a .545 attack percentage to help lead the Navy volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Hampton Tuesday night in Macdonough Hall. The Midshipmen improve to 8-11 on the year with the 30-16, 30-16, 30-14 victory over the Lady Pirates (5-10).
"We received a solid effort from everyone who played tonight," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "It started with our serving and continued with our passing when the ball came back to our side of the court. We were able to have good swings on the ball throughout the match."
After totaling seven kills and a .286 attack percentage in the opening game, Dougherty tallied kills on each of her nine swings during the remainder of the match. Her 16 kills was one shy of tying her career high, originally set in a five-game match, and marked the third time over the last four matches in which she has produced double figure kills.
Navy as a team hit .387 on the night, with Nikki England (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) finishing with nine kills and a .615 attack percentage and Megan Boyd (Sr., Richmond, Va.) tallying six kills on seven swings for a .714 hitting percentage.
Navy's defense hauled in 33 kills and limited the Lady Pirates to a -.039 attack percentage.
In addition, Navy recorded 17 service aces on the night, with both England and Meredith Biri (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) accounting for five service aces.
The Mids will now embark on a key road trip in the race for the Patriot League postseason, with matches slated for Friday at Bucknell and Saturday at Colgate. The Bison are in fourth place in the league standings, one victory ahead of both the Mids and the Raiders.
This weekend's matches will close the first half of the league season. Only the top-four teams in the standings at the end of the regular season advance to the playoffs.
"It is an important road trip for us," said Schwob. "These are two of the teams we are fighting for in the race for the playoffs. This weekend may mark only the halfway point in the league season, but these are already playoff matches for us and both teams we are facing.:
