NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Navy tennis team put together a strong opening day showing Friday at the Hampton Roads Invitational of Newport News, totaling 12 wins in 17 matches and advancing five singles players and two doubles teams to the quarterfinal rounds of their respective draws.
"It was a good first day to the tournament," said Navy head coach John Officer. "All of the singles players who advanced had to win two matches today, so we received a number of good performances."
Advancing to the quarterfinal round of their singles draws were Jason Hill (So., Atlanta, Ga.) in the B flight, Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.) and Ramsey Lemaich (Fr., Danville, Calif.) in the C flight, and both Jarrad Smoke (Fr., Belmar, N.J.) and Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) in the D flight.
Complete results in both singles and doubles are unavailable at the time.
The three-day tournament, featuring teams from throughout the region, runs through Sunday.
