HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colgate rallied from a late five-point deficit to win game one and carried that momentum through a three-game sweep of the Navy volleyball team, Saturday night in Hamilton, N.Y. After winning the opening game by a score of 31-29, the Raiders won the next two games by scores of 30-21 and 30-22.
Colgate improved to 10-10 overall this year and 3-4 in the Patriot League with the win, while Navy fell to 8-13 on the season and 2-5 in league matches with the loss.
After taking a 14-9 lead early in game one, the Mids found themselves up by only one point at 14-13. Navy then slowly started to pull away from Colgate and found itself within one point of winning the game at 29-24. However, despite having multiple swings to win the game, Colgate rallied and scored the next seven points to take a 1-0 lead.
"Finishing games has been an issue for us all season," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "We had some of our best hitters have swings to close it out, but we just couldn't find a way to do it. Missing an opportunity like that is something we cannot afford to do, especially on the road in a tight league match."
The loss overshadowed a great individual effort from Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.) who tallied 15 kills, 23 digs and a .303 attack percentage. Her defensive effort set a new Navy record for the most digs hauled in during a three-game match.
Colgate was led by Erin Kanetzke, who knocked down 15 kills and did not commit an error on 25 swings to total a .600 attack percentage.
The Raiders as a team held statistical advantages over the Mids in hitting percentage (.221-.181), service aces (6-2) and blocks (6.0-5.0), while Navy posted 61 digs to 57 for Colgate.
Navy will open a three-match homestand Tuesday night when the Mids play host to Loyola at 6 p.m. in Macdonough Hall.
