ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.), Rachel Dougherty (Jr., Derwood, Md.) and Alexa Gibbs (So., Springfield, Ill.) combined for 31 kills and a .456 attack percentage as the Navy (9-13) volleyball team posted a 30-24, 30-20, 30-24 victory over Loyola (6-18), Tuesday night in Macdonough Hall.
"I think our serve was key tonight," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "Even though we only had six aces, we scored points off of twice as many serves which limited their offense. I also think our hitters were aggressive in making themselves available, and Kim Koss (Sr., Clarence Center, N.Y.) did a nice job of distributing the ball to open players."
Navy started the match slowly, quickly falling behind by scores of 5-1 and 7-2. The Mids were able to tie the score at 9-9, then broke open the game after a 6-0 run gave Navy a 21-15 advantage.
Game two also was close early on until a kill by Gibbs gave Navy an 8-7 lead. Gibbs then stepped to the service line and promptly helped the Mids score the next seven points with her jump serve.
The Mids totaled four aces in the second game and their serving limited Loyola to a .097 attack percentage, while Navy tallied a .455 percentage with 17 kills and just two errors on 33 swings.
Game three was close, but Navy started to consistently score one or two points on its serve during the middle part of the game to pull away. After a sideout gave Navy a 17-14 lead, the Mids scored six points on their next 10 serves, while the Greyhounds did not score a point on any of their four serves during that same time frame, to allow Navy to take a 26-18 advantage.
Sims knocked down 12 kills and hauled in 13 digs to lead Navy in both statistics, while Dougherty totaled 10 kills and Gibbs added nine kills and a .571 attack percentage.
Loyola's Karlee Woodward led all players with 18 kills and a .600 hitting percentage.
Navy as a team totaled a .324 attack percentage on the night, while holding Loyola to a .074 percentage.
Navy will continue its homestand with league matches this weekend against Lafayette and Lehigh. Friday's match against the Leopards will begin at 7 p.m., with Saturday's match against the Mountain Hawks slated for 4 p.m.
