Mids Advance at Tennis Tournament

Oct. 20, 2006

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Navy's Nate Nelms (St., Mary's, Ga.) advanced in singles and teamed with Jason Hill (So., Marietta, Ga.) to win their opening round doubles match at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Men's Regional Championship Friday in Philadelphia.

Nelms moved on to the second round in singles after posting a 6-1, 6-3 victory over George Carpeni of Princeton.

"Nate played extremely well," said Navy head coach John Officer. "He is really rounding into form at the right time."

Nelms advances to Saturday's round of 64 where he will play Zoltan Bus of Manhattan, who received a bye Friday due to his No. 17 seed.

Competing as a doubles team for the first time, Nelms and Hill combined to record an 8-4 win over Matt Fawcett and Arjun Valdya, who form the No. 1 doubles team for Rutgers.

"This is the first time they played as a team, but they showed some great chemistry and really clicked out there," said Officer.

The Navy duo will face the Princeton team of Ted Mabry and Alex Vuckovic Saturday.
