Navy Heavyweights Place 18th at Head of the Charles

Oct. 22, 2006

BOSTON, Mass. - The varsity eight boat from the Navy heavyweight crew team placed 18th overall and 11th among U.S. college entries at the Head of the Charles Regatta, Sunday on the Charles River in Boston.

The Navy crew completed the 2.5-mile course in a time of 14:55.449. The U.S. National Team won the race in a time of 14:09.673, with Washington placing second overall and first among U.S. colleges with a time of 14:29.917.

"It was a decent race," said Navy head coach Rick Clothier. "We were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time at two bridges, so we lost about 12-15 seconds there. But those things happen at the Head of the Charles."

There were 43 entries in the championship eight race, including 30 U.S. college crews.

In addition to its championship eight entry, Navy's four-man crew would place fourth among U.S. colleges and seventh overall in its race with a time of 16:21.225. American college crews placing ahead of the Mids were Stanford (second overall), in a time of 15:52.289, Harvard (fourth), with a clocking of 15:54.197, and Wisconsin (sixth overall), in a time of 16:13.773.

"I thought our four-man boat gave an exceptional row," said Clothier.
