PRINCETON, N.J. -- The tenth-ranked Navy water polo team scored a key 9-7 victory over 14th-ranked Princeton on Saturday afternoon, giving Navy sole possession of first place in the CWPA Southern Division. The Mids, which won their sixth straight game, improved to 16-5 with the win and 6-0 in the Southern Division.
Todd Carlson led the Mids with four goals, Michael Mulvey added three and Aaron Recko and Tyler Hill added one each. George Naughton had a strong game in goal with 13 saves and five steals. The Mids led 2-0 after the first quarter, 4-2 at halftime and 7-4 after three quarters. Navy hurt themselves, giving up 14 6-on-5 chances for Princeton. Schofield was puzzled by the total.
"I was baffled by what we were doing to give them so many opportunities. We had seven chances, they had 14," said Schofield. "Obviously, we were doing something wrong, and it is something that we need to sort out."
Navy also defeated the New York Athletic Club, 16-10, in an exhibition game.
Navy will close out its league season next weekend, hosting Bucknell and Princeton next Saturday in MacDonough Hall. The Mids battle Bucknell at noon, and then Princeton at 8:00 p.m.
