Mids Remain Unbeaten on the Squash Courts

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team improved to 7-0 with five match wins over the last two days at the Navy Squash Round Robin held in Annapolis at the Bancroft Hall and Halsey Field House Squash Courts. The Mids lost just two matches among the five match-ups over the weekend, while it has dropped just three games this season.

The Mids earned a 7-2 victory over Denison Friday night, dropping the No. 3 and 5 spots on the ladder. Sophomore Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) dropped a tough match in a five-game decision to Denison's Max Laverty. The two players traded wins until the final game where Laverty earned a 9-4 decision to win the match. Navy junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) picked up a 3-1 victory over Joran Diwan, winning 9-3, 6-9, 9-4, 9-0, 9-0.

In the nightcap against Columbia, the Mids turned in a 9-0 win and were able to go deeper into the lineup. Freshman Teddy George (West Hartford, Conn.) blanked Jahager Juzibaum in the No. 9 match-up, earning his second win of the year. Second-year standout Will Pappas (Philadelphia, Pa.) played the No. 8 spot where he handed David Nee a 9-0, 9-2, 9-3 setback.

On Saturday, the Mids swept all three of their opponents, 9-0. In the early match against Haverford, Navy team captain Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) cruised past Alex Salton, 9-2, 9-2, 9-2. Freshman Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) earned a 9-1, 9-3, 9-4 victory over Ben Mantica at the No. 3 position.

Freshman Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) paced the Mids to a 9-0 win over Northwestern by posting a 10-8, 9-0, 9-0 victory over over the Wildcats' Ed Gadient at the No. 1 position. Junior Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) also returned to the courts this weekend after nursing an injury a week ago. He picked up a 9-3, 9-0, 9-0 win over Diana Sans at the No. 8 slot.

Navy defeated Fordham in its final match of the day, 9-0. Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) ousted Peter Zipf, 9-0, 9-1, 9-0, at No. 2, while first-year varsity player Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) claimed a 9-1, 9-4, 9-2 triumph over Ben Ehrman.

Ten of the Mids' 12 players who saw action turned in undefeated marks after the first two days of the Navy Squash Round Robin, including senior Dan Hellier (Modesto, Calif.) and sophomore Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) who each produced 5-0 records. Mattsson, Sawin, Mantica, Hamilton and Hartley all posted 4-0 marks, while Pappas was 3-0 and Teddy George was 2-0.

Navy concludes tournament action Sunday with a 10:00 am match-up against Hobart.
