Navy Comes Up Short At Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Mike Nardi scored a season-high 20 points and Curtis Sumpter added 16 to lead Villanova past Navy 70-61 on Saturday.

Dante Cunningham had nine points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-1), who won their home opener after playing four straight road games - at Northwood (Fla.) and games against the College of Charleston, Xavier and Iowa in the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas.

Greg Sprink led Navy (4-2) with 22 points, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Kaleo Kina added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kina fell hard to the floor with 5:33 left and didn't return to the game.

Villanova led by as many as 18 points in the first half and held a 33-19 advantage at halftime. Navy whittled the lead to 51-49 with 7:49 remaining on a 3-pointer by Adam Teague.

Villanova responded with six straight points, stretching its lead to 57-49. Navy closed within 62-58 with 3:02 left before Sumpter was fouled on a 3-point attempt. He hit all three shots to give the Wildcats a 65-58 lead.

The Wildcats shot 40 percent and committed 14 turnovers. Navy shot 38 percent and had 11 turnovers.

Villanova outrebounded Navy 45-30 and shot 23-for-35 from the line. Navy shot 4-for-9 from the throw.
