PRINCETON, N.J. - The Navy men's swimming and diving team closed its regular season with a pair of losses to Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League opponents Princeton and Columbia, Saturday afternoon in Princeton, N.J. The Mids dropped a 149-94 decision to Columbia, with Princeton topping Navy by a 180-63 count. In thie third meet of the day, the Tigers outscored the Lions, 175-68.
Navy ends its regular season with a 10-5 record and a 3-5 mark in the EISL, while Princeton improves to 7-1 in the league and 8-3 overall. The 1-1 record on the day moves Columbia's mark on the season to 8-2 and its EISL record to 6-2.
"We had a tough task ahead of us today, what with Princeton and Columbia battling each other for the top spot in the EISL," said Navy head coach Bill Roberts. "Both of them produced very fast times. For us, it was a mixed bag of results. The guys who swam well for us all had really good times, with a number of regular season best times being set."
The 10 victories on the season gves Navy back-to-back 10-win campaigns for the first time since recording 10 victories in both 1997 and '98.
Navy swimmers recorded a trio victories over Columbia on the day. Mike Linn (Sr., Newhall, Calif.) won the 50 free with a time of 20.86, Joe Smutz (Sr., Marriottsville, Md.) recorded a 45.86 to win the 100 free and Kevin Mukri (Jr., Silver Spring, Md.) won the 200 back in a time of 1:50.74.
Navy will next be in action Feb. 23-25 when the Mids play host to the Patriot League Championship. The following week, March 2-4, the Mids will take part in the EISL Championship in New York.
