ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to a halt at the hands of a strong Yale team, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Severn Valley Racquet Club. Navy drops to 7-2 on the season, heading into Sunday's match at Georgetown in Washington, D.C., at 11:00 a.m.
"We played very hard and gave a great effort, but it wasn't enough," said Navy head John Officer. "Yale is a very good team that plays very aggressive and it kind of got us on our heels today. We will learn from the loss and hope to play well tomorrow."
Navy's lone win of the day came at No. 6 singles, where freshman Johnny Waters won in straight sets over Josh Lederman, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Navy's Brandon Carter was narrowly defeated at No. 4 singles, as Yale's Rowan Reynolds edged the Navy junior, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-8. Freshman Nate Nelms dropped a 6-1, 7-5, decision to the region's top-ranked player, and No. 55 in the nation, Brandon Wai. Nelms was serving up 5-4 in the second set, but Wai broke him and won the final two games of the set to claim the victory.
"Nate played well today," said Officer. "He was serving for the second set against Wai, who is regarded very highly. I thought he gave a strong performance for a freshman against a very good foe."
Navy also dropped all three doubles matches, 8-4, 8-5, and 8-4.
