Owens To Be Honored At Philadelphia SportsWriters Dinner

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Navy senior quarterback Lamar Owens (Savannah, Ga.) will be recognized for winning the Most Valuable Player Award at the Army-Navy football game on Monday night at the annual Philadelphia SportsWriters Association awards dinner.

Owens rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries and completed three of his four pass attempts for 41 yards in Navy's 42-23 rout of the Black Knights.

Owens will be in elite company as numerous Philadelphia area greats will be honored or in attendance. Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies will be there to pick up his National League Rookie of the Year award, while Dick Allen will receive the Living Legend Award. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel and general manager Pat Gillick will also be in attendance.

Simon Gagne of the Philadelphia Flyers will receive the Philadelphia SportsWriters Association's Good Guy Award for his continued "outstanding cooperation with the media".

Baseball's 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox will be honored as the "Team of the Year". Catcher Chris Widger and longtime team executive Eddie Einhorn will be in attendance to accept the award.

Safety Brian Dawkins of the Philadelphia Eagles is being honored as the Pro Athlete of the Year in Philadelphia, while cornerback Troy Vincent will receive the "Native Son" award.

The 1980 Eagles will receive a new award from the PSWA, that will honor Philadelphia's greatest teams from the past. Confirmed Eagles guests include coach Dick Vermeil, Marion Campbell, Chuck Clausen, Jim Murray, Jim Gallagher, Chick Mc Elrone, Mike Dougherty, Ron O'Neil, Ken Iman, Lem Burnham, Reggie Wilkes, Randy Logan and Keith Krepfle. The 1980 Eagles streaked through the regular season with a 12-4 record, then beat Minnesota, and Dallas in NFC Playoff games, before losing Super Bowl XV to Oakland, 27-10.

The MC for the evening will be Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas.
