Final Stats
RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond won six of the first seven events to defeat Navy 167-130 in women's swimming and diving action at the Robins Center Natatorium in Richmond on Saturday afternoon. The Midshipmen dropped to 6-7 on the season, while the Spiders improved their mark to 2-4.
Sophomore Katie Griffin (Ellicott City, Md.) swept the one- and three-meter diving events for the 11th time in 13 meets this season. Griffin won the one-meter event with a score of 277.50, while posting a 268.50 mark in the three-meter competition. Navy went 1-2-3 in both diving events, as senior Sheila Singer (Princeton, N.J.) placed second on the one-meter and third on the three-meter and freshman Desiree' Robison (Tucson, Ariz.) finished third in the one-meter and second in the three-meter event.
Freshman Kelly Zahalka (Richmond, Va.) also claimed first in two events on Saturday. Zahalka won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.29 seconds then won the 200-yard individual medley with a season-best 2:08.54 showing. The freshman's two victories pushed her total to 25 wins on the season.
Classmate Jennie Spencer (Smithburg, W.Va.) paced the field in the 100-yard backstroke by 1.71 seconds courtesy of a 58.80-second showing. Spencer, sophomore Kristin Lowd (High Point, N.C.), freshman Mary Hesler (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Cameron Wallace (Fredericksburg, Va.) combined to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:44.66.
The Midshipmen return home for the Navy Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 11, before hosting the Patriot League Championship on Feb. 23-25 in Lejeune Hall.
