HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Navy tennis team won the doubles point, but couldn't hold on in singles action, falling to Colgate in Navy's Patriot League opener, 4-3. The loss drops Navy's record to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
"It was an extremely disappointing performance on our part," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We thought we were the better team, but we didn't show it today. We started well winning the doubles point, but couldn't hold on and make the most of our opportunities. It was a frustrating day for us."
Navy claimed the doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Nate Nelms and Brandon Carter teamed up for a 9-8 (3) victory at No. 1 and Johnny Waters and Jason Hill won at No. 3 doubles, 8-5, to give Navy the doubles point.
However, Navy couldn't hold the lead in singles action, winning just two matches at Nos. 5 and 6 singles. Waters won his match at No. 5, with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, victory. Stanley Kahl won at No. 6 singles in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
But the Mids couldn't hold the lead, falling in singles action at Nos. 1 through 4. Nate Nelms dropped a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (11-9), decision at No. 1, Jason Hill lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, Mickey Gallagher topped Adrian Lai at No. 3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, and Marshall Wheeler defeated Brandon Carter at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (8-4).
"We were up 6-3 in the tiebreaker at No. 1 singles and couldn't hold on," said Officer. "We were up a break in the third set at No. 2 singles and couldn't hold on. We weren't able to win the third set at No. 3 singles. We didn't win the points we needed to win. It was just an extremely disappointing loss for us. We need to finish our points. We let them come back in almost all of the matches and it cost us."
The Mids will battle Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at noon in Lewisburg, Pa.
