COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 70-ranked Maryland tennis team won five-of-six singles matches and all three doubles matches to earn a 6-1 victory over Navy on Wednesday afternoon. The loss, Navy's seventh of the year to a ranked opponent, dropped Navy's record to 9-8 overall.
"We were missing two starters today, but it didn't hurt us that much," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We were competitive in the doubles matches, but didn't have a great performance in singles play. It was a good warm-up for the weekend when we play Lafayette and American."
Navy dropped all three doubles matches by tight margins to lose the doubles point. At No. 1, Maryland's Boris Fetbroyt and Josh Brauser defeated Kyle Jones and Nate Nelms, 8-4. In the No. 2 doubles match, No. 35-ranked Scott Fink and Andy Orban of Maryland rallied for an 8-6 victory over Adrian Lai and Alex James. The Navy duo led 6-3 and were up two breaks, but couldn't hold off the Maryland group. At No. 3, Nickolai Nielsen and Andreas Vaage-Nilsen defeated Johnny Waters and Jason Hill, 8-4.
The Mids' lone victory of the day came at No. 2 singles, where freshman Jason Hill defeated Vaage-Nilsen, 6-2, 6-3.
"Jason played very well today," said Officer. "He was in control the entire match against a good opponent and played perhaps his best match of the year."
Navy will host Lafayette on Saturday at noon, before traveling to American on Sunday.
