ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team won all nine matches and cruised to a 7-0 victory over Howard at the Naval Academy Tennis Courts. The win moved Navy's record to 12-9 overall, heading into Tuesday's match with UMBC at the Naval Academy Tennis Courts, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
"We played a good match today and won all of our matches," said Navy head coach John Officer. "There was some spottiness in our play, but it was a good tuneup for Army. I was very pleased with the way Nate Nelms and Jason Hill played today. They looked strong this afternoon."
Navy cruised in the three doubles matches to gain the single point. At No. 1 doubles, Nelms and Brandon Carter teamed for an 8-6 triumph. At No. 2 doubles, Stanley Kahl and Adrian Lai won 8-5, and Johnny Waters and Hill combined for an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Navy was equally as impressive in singles play, winning all but one match in straight sets. Kahl was the first Mid off at No. 6 singles, claiming a 6-1, 6-0, victory. Alex James had a strong showing at No. 5 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1, and Nelms clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2, triumph at No. 1 singles. Jason Hill and Adrian Lai won in straight sets and Carter was the lone Mid stretched to three sets, winning at No. 4 singles.
Navy hosts UMBC at 2:00 p.m., on Tuesday afternoon, then entertains Army on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
