WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Navy tennis team ran into a buzzsaw Saturday in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals, falling to American, 4-0, ending Navy's season at 14-10.
"We just got outplayed today, plain and simple," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We played about the same as the first time we played them (a 4-3 American victory), but they played much, much better. They were on us early and really never let up. They were hungry and were out to prove that dropping their program is a mistake. I wouldn't be surprised if they won the tournament."
Navy dropped the doubles point, as American's top two tandems clinched the doubles point for the Eagles. Nicholas Frayssinoux and Juancarlo Vazquex defeated Nate Nelms and Brandon Carter at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, and Andrew Singer and Sebastien Proisy knocked off Adrian Lai and Stanley Kahl, 8-4. The third match was retired, because the Eagles had already clinched the doubles point, with the American pair leading 7-5.
American then cruised in the doubles matches, winning the three finished matches in straight sets. At No. 1 singles, Frayssinoux knocked off Nelms, 6-2, 6-4. In No. 4 singles, Andrew Singer defeated Brandon Carter, 6-1, 6-2. And at No. 6 singles, Josh Levitz topped Alex James, 6-3, 6-4. American also led in the three matches that were retired.
Navy finished the season with a 14-10 mark and will return five starters off this year's team, including three freshmen that saw extensive action.
