Navy Tennis Eases Past Lehigh, 6-1

April 8, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy tennis team pieced together a strong performance and cruised past Lehigh, 6-1, in action on Saturday afternoon. The win moves Navy's overall record to 11-9 and 3-2 in the Patriot League. The victory was very important in terms of playoff positioning for the Patriot League Tournament.

"We played very, very well today," said Navy head coach John Officer. "It was likely our best performance of the season and we had an outstanding performance against a very capable Lehigh team. It was a very good win for us and was a very encouraging sign as we head into the stretch run."

The Mids dominated doubles action, gaining the point by winning all three matches in convincing fashion. Navy's closest match came at No. 2 doubles, where Nate Nelms and Brandon Carter edged Lehigh's Ryan Lloyd and Brad Nelson, 9-8 in a tiebreaker.

Navy then won five-of-six singles matches to cap off the easy victory. The Mids won four of their five matches in straight sets, with the lone three-set triumph coming from Johnny Waters at No. 5 singles. Waters lost the first set but rallied in the final two sets for the win.

The Mids will host Howard next Saturday in Annapolis, beginning at noon.
