Kunzelman Places 29th at World Championships

July 28, 2006

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy rising sophomore Lisa Kunzelman wrapped up a successful summer season over the week with a 29th-place finish out of 110 shooters at the ISSF World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. As a three-person team, the United States Jr. National Team finished fifth overall, achieving a better score than the U.S. Senior National Team. Kunzelman fired a 391 in the 10-meter air rifle competition, finishing eight points off the winner, China's Yi Zhang. Kunzelman missed a top-20 finish by just one point.

The high finish rounds out a spectacular freshman year for the Constantia, N.Y., native. Kunzelman earned a spot in the World Championships with a second-place finish at the U.S. Shooting National Championships, which coupled with a second-place finish at the Junior Olympics, helped her make the team. While at Navy, Kunzelman earned second-team All-America honors, helping Navy to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

"Lisa had a spectacular year for us and she will only get better," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley. "She wasn't that heavily recruited out of high school, but has worked tremendously hard and has been very focused on the range for us. She has had a great year."

Navy will return all five regulars from last year's fourth-place NCAA finish when camp opens in the fall.
