ELON, N.C. - Beth McArthur (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) totaled 13 kills and a .571 hitting percentage in Navy's three-game loss to UAB, Friday evening on the opening day of the Phoenix Classic Volleyball Tournament in Elon, N.C. The Blazers improved to 2-2 on the season with the 30-27, 30-25, 30-16 victory over the now 0-2 Midshipmen.
"We played very hard during games one and two and had our opportunities," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "After the break we struggled with our serve receive.
"I'm not happy with the loss, but I am pleased with the steps we made since Wednesday night (a four-game loss to St. Francis). It was a much better performance for us tonight."
In addition to McArthur's strong offensive performance, Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.) led the Navy defense with 13 digs while adding eight kills.
Navy will continue play at the tournament with a Saturday morning match against TCU and a Saturday night contest against tournament-host Elon.
"This is a tough tournament, but playing strong teams will only help us down the road," said Schwob.
