Navy Water Polo Falls to No. 4-Ranked Stanford

Sept. 10, 2006

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The No. 12-ranked Navy water polo team struggled offensively for the second straight game against a highly-ranked foe, dropping a 14-5 decision to fourth-ranked Stanford on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Mids closed out their weekend with a 2-1 record in Colorado and are now 6-2 on the season. The game was the season opener for Stanford.

"We were a little bit better offensively than we were last week against No. 1-ranked California, but not much better," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "We just struggled against their defense and their All-American goalie. We are not good enough to just throw the ball up and hope it goes in. We have to get better offensively and stop giving up counter attacks, which hurt us last week and today. Stanford is a good team, but I felt we could have played better."

The Cardinal jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and led 6-1 at halftime. Stanford held a comfortable 10-3 advantage after three quarters.

Bram Arnold led the Mids with a pair of goals, while Aaron Recko, Tyler Hill and Johnny Meiners tallied one goal each. George Naughton played the first three quarters in goal, making 10 saves, while Steve Craney played the final quarter, stopping three shots.

Navy will battle Stanford again next weekend in the NorCal Tournament, held in Palo Alto, Calif. The team will battle the Cardinal at 8:30 am (PST). Fans in the area for that night's football game between Navy and Stanford are encouraged to stop by and support the Navy water polo team.
