ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Jason Hill (So., Atlanta, Ga.) had a hand in both of Navy's victories on the day as Navy tennis team opened its fall campaign by facing players from Arkansas and Oklahoma Friday as part of the Navy Invitational at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
"Overall, for the first competition of the season and with it coming against strong teams from the Big 12 and SEC, I thought we played pretty well," said Navy head coach John Officer. "Jason played very well in winning both of his matches today, and we lost three long, three-set singles matches which could have easily gone the other way.
"We have some things to work on for Saturday's match, but it was a good one to come out of the gate with."
Hill recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Jorge Villanueva of Arkansas, and teamed with Johnny Waters (Jr., Papillion, Neb.) for an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles over Sergey Avdeyez of Oklahoma and Dmitry Lebedev of Arkansas.
Waters played one of those three long singles matches, eventually falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Oklahoma's Frederico Chavarria at No. 3 singles. Also playing tight singles matches were Nate Nelms (So., St. Mary's, Ga.), who lost 6-4 in the third set to Avdeyez at No. 1 singles, and Ramsey Lemaich (Fr., Danville, Calif.), who lost 6-3 in the third set to Oklahoma's Ryan Thomas at No. 5 singles.
The Navy Invitational continues with matches Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's matches feature Navy facing Saint Joseph's at 9 a.m., followed by the combined Arkansas-Oklahoma team playing Maryland at 2 p.m.
Weather permitting, all matches will be held on the Naval Academy grounds.
