WEST POINT, N.Y. - A career-high 20 kills from Alexa Gibbs (So., Springfield, Ill.) helped Navy record a 30-23, 26-30, 30-20, 30-17 victory over The Citadel, Saturday afternoon at the Army of One volleyball tournament in West Point, N.Y.
"We did a lot of experimenting this weekend with different players and lineup combinations," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "By the end of the weekend I could see us start to be playing more consistently at the level we want and need to be at. There is still a great deal of room for improvement, but I feel we have used the challenges we faced during the non-conference season to better prepare us for the start of the league season next weekend."
Navy's offense totaled at least a .300 hitting percentage in three of the four games of the match, while its defense held The Citadel to under an attack percentage of under .200 in three games. The Mids ended the match totaling a season-best .304 attack percentage while holding the Bulldogs to a .162 percentage over the four games.
Five players hauled in at least 10 digs for the Navy defense, with Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.) and Aimee' Burns (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) each totaling 17 digs. Navy as a team tallied 75 digs to 63 for The Citadel, with Navy also holding a 10-1 advantage in blocks.
In addition to her 20 kills, which is a season high for a Mid this year, Gibbs also hit a career-high .484 and tallied a career-best five blocks. Rachel Dougherty (Jr., Derwood, Md.), who totaled 15 kills, 10 digs and four blocks in Saturday morning's match against Radford, recorded 12 kills, 14 digs, four blocks and three aces against The Citadel.
Navy, 4-8 on the year, will play host to Coppin State Tuesday night at 6 p.m., then will open the Patriot League season Friday with a match at Lehigh.
The Citadel fell to 5-7 on the season with the loss.
