ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy tennis team continued its strong play on the opening weekend of the season by winning seven of 11 matches from Saint Joseph's, Saturday at the Severn Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
"I thought we played very well," said Navy head coach John Officer. "We won most of the matches we had an opportunity to win. The team showed excellent character and with the win over a strong opponent like Saint Joseph's I think we proved we will be a team to be reckoned with."
Picking up a pair of wins on the day for Navy were Jason Hill (So., Atlanta, Ga.), Johnny Waters (Jr., Papillion, Neb.), Adrian Lai (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Stanley Kahl (Sr., Richland, Pa.).
Waters and Lai each dropped only five games in posting straight set victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, while Hill and Kahl both posted 6-3 wins in the third set of their matches.
Hill and Waters also combined to record an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while Kahl and Lai posted an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
Navy's remaining victory on the day came at No. 4 doubles as Alex James (Jr., Visalia, Calif.) and Jarrod Smoke (Fr., Belmar, N.J.) posted a 9-8 win, 7-4 in the tiebreaker, over the team of Brian Costello and Luco Perez-Abreu.
Round-robin play at the three-day tournament will conclude Sunday with the combined Arkansas and Oklahoma team playing Saint Joseph's at 8 a.m., followed by the Mids facing Maryland at 2 p.m. Weather permitting, both matches are slated to be held on the Naval Academy grounds.
