ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy women's cross country team placed five runners in the top 15 en route to a second-place finish at the Salty Seadog Invitational on a soggy, Saturday morning. Richmond won the meet with 24 points, while Navy was second with 53 points. Loyola (Md.), American and UMBC rounded out the top five.
"We ran without our Nos. 1 and 3 runners today and are working on having teammates step up," said head coach Karen Boyle. "We are still in a very early conditioning phase and we continued our training through today. We ran a little tight in the first half of the race, but the second half was much better."
Navy was led by Emily Castro, who finished the six-kilometer course in 23:23.99, which was good for fifth overall. Three Mids then placed 10th through 12th, led by Maureen Dooley's 10th-place showing in 23:53.45. Kyleigh Millhouse was 11th overall in 23:57.36 and Allison Barlow was 12th in 24:03.25. Jade Baum rounded out Navy's scoring with a 15th-place finish and a clocking of 24:12.92.
Three more Mids finished in the top 20, as Juliann Jordan, Vicki Moore and Chelsea Decker finished 17th, 18th, and 20th respectively.
Despite the second-place finish, Boyle was pleased with the effort.
"Early on, its nice to be able to rely on others four our scoring," said Boyle. "When we have the whole team running together, we should be able to score much easier."
Navy will be in action next Saturday at the Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pa. Action gets underway at 10:00 a.m.
