ELON, N.C. - TCU outhit Navy .233-.090 in recording a four-game victory over the Midshipmen, Saturday morning at the Phoenix Classic volleyball tournament in Elon, N.C. The Frogs improved to 6-1 on the season with the 25-30, 30-21, 30-18, 30-20 victory over the 0-3 Mids.
"For the second-straight night, we made a lot of progress in our execution and overall play," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "You can see us improving in every game and starting to come together as a team. While we came to this tournament to win, and we are not happy to lose the match, we also came to play better teams and improve ourselves. Even though our results didn't show up in the final score I feel we are accomplishing just that."
The Mids came out firing in game one, holding a slim lead through most of the frame. Navy then broke open a 22-22 contest with four-straight points before closing out the game with the five-point victory.
TCU, which held a size advantage throughout all six rotations thanks to having a pair of 6-foot, 3-inch middle blockers, jumped out to a lead of 17-10 midway through game two, but the Mids closed to within three points at 21-18. A 4-1 TCU run halted the Navy rally, however.
After TCU controlled most of game three, game four was once again a close contest. The Frogs held a slim advantage through the majority of the game, before breaking open the 21-18 game with a 6-1 run to finally pull away from the Mids.
Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.) led Navy with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Beth McArthur (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) and Nikki England (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) both posted nine kills and 10 digs.
Navy will close out the tournament Saturday night by playing tournament-host Elon in a 7 p.m. match. Audio of the match can be heard live on Elon's student-run radio station WSOE, which can be accessed through the university's web site -- http://org.elon.edu/wsoe/ (.)
