UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Navy women's cross country senior runner Justine Whipple (Duxbury, Mass.) posted a team-best ninth-place finish to lead the Midshipmen to a fourth-place showing among 25 teams at the 2006 Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational on Saturday morning.
Syracuse won the team title with a score of 64 points, followed by host Penn State's 76 points, Maryland's 79 points, Navy's 132 points and UConn's 190 points to round out the top-five schools.
Whipple's covered the 6k Penn State Blue Course in 21:04.90, 43.45 seconds behind individual champion Jillian Sullivan's time from UConn. Whipple has posted Navy's fastest time in each of the last-eight races in which she has competed.
Senior Emily Castro (Centennial, Colo.) followed up her fifth-place finish in last week's Salty Seadog Invitational with a 15th-place showing on Saturday, courtesy of a 22:20.10 showing. Castro has placed among Navy's two-fastest runner in each of the three meets she has raced at the Penn State Blue Course.
Junior Kyleigh Millhouse (Boiling Springs, Pa.) crossed the finish line in 22:34.30 to place 24th overall, followed by Allison Barlow's (Orange Park, Fla.) 33rd-place time of 22:47.70 and senior Juliann Jordan's (Kanehoe, Hawai'i) 23:17.80 clocking to finish 51st.
Navy heads back on the road next Saturday, Sept. 30, for the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The race is slated to begin at 6:25 p.m. EST (3:25 p.m. PST).
