NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Navy junior John Olsen (Staten Island, N.Y.) posted a 52nd-place showing among a talented group of runners as the Midshipmen finished 15th among 20 teams at the Notre Dame Invitational in men's cross country action on Friday afternoon.
A total of seven schools ranked among the top-30 in the nation raced in Friday's meet, including the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. However, unranked North Carolina State won the meet with a team score of 86 points, followed by No. 27 Providence's 109 points, No. 15 Michigan's 123 points and No. 16 Notre Dame's and No. 26 Florida's 160 points to tie for fourth.
The Midshipmen tallied 413 points on Friday to finish ahead of the two other Patriot League teams competing in Notre Dame, Ind. Army landed 19th with a team score of 520 points, while Colgate rounded out the field in 20th courtesy of a 546-point effort.
Olsen covered the 8k Notre Dame Golf Course in 24:54, his fastest time of the season, to lead the pack of Navy runners on Friday. This marks the second time in 2006 that he has paced the Midshipmen across the finish line, as he recorded the team's best time at the Fordham Invitational on Sept. 9. The junior has landed among Navy's two-fastest times in all four meets he has raced in this year.
Classmate John Kress (Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed in 73rd place with a 25:05 clocking. Kress, like Olsen, has finished as one of Navy's top-two runners in all four races in which he's competed in this season.
Freshman Chris Horel (Belford, N.J.) landed 98th overall, third among the Mids, with his 25:25 showing. Horel is the only Midshipman to have scored in all-five Navy meets in 2006.
Senior Michael Niemi (Duluth, Minn.) crossed the finish line in 25:26 to immediately follow Horel in 99th place. Junior Lucas Burke (Bakersfield, Calif.) rounded out the scoring-five with his 102nd-place time of 25:27.
Navy will return home and wrap up its regular season on Saturday, Oct. 14, by hosting Army on the USNA Cross Country Course in the annual Star Meet. Race time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
