ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Beth McArthur (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) tied a school record for attack percentage in helping lead the Navy volleyball team to a three-game victory over Holy Cross Saturday night in Macdonough Hall. The Midshipmen improved to 7-10 on the year, 2-2 in Patriot League matches, with the 30-20, 30-23, 30-19 victory over the Crusaders (2-14, 0-5).
The Navy win comes one day after a loss to Army in the Star Match between the service academies.
"No matter what the result of the match against Army is, it is always a little bit of a challenge to turn around and play the next day," said Navy head coach Mike Schwob. "To their credit, our players came focused and ready to play tonight. We changed some things around at the start of and during the match, but everyone who took to the floor tonight contributed to the win."
McArthur totaled 12 kills and no errors on 16 swings for a .750 attack percentage over the three games. That mark ties the school record set by Gina Foltz in 1995. McArthur now holds the overall school record for attack percentage, as well as at least a share of the three-game (.750, tonight), four-game (.667, 2003) and five-game (.667, 2003) hitting percentage standards at Navy.
Kim Koss (Sr., Clarence Center, N.Y.) set the Mids to a season-best .400 hitting percentage on the evening, while the Navy defense held the Crusaders to a .121 percentage.
Joining McArthur in double-figure kills for Navy was Jessie Sims (So., Etowah, N.C.) with 11. Defensively for Navy, Rachel Dougherty (Jr., Derwood, Md.) recorded four blocks, while McArthur, Sims and Alexa Gibbs (So., Springfield, Ill.) all recorded two blocks apiece as Navy as a team recorded 10 blocks. In addition, Meredith Biri (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) hauled in a career-high 13 digs for the Mids.
Navy will next be in action Thursday night when the Mids play at American.
