PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The fourth-ranked Penn squash team shut out No. 10 Navy, 9-0, Wednesday evening at Ringe Courts in Philadelphia. It marks just the third loss for the Midshipmen this season and only the fourth shutout by a Navy opponent in the last 40 matches.

"We got thumped pretty good tonight and we found out why Penn is the fourth-ranked team in the country," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson. "We played well in spots, but we never could get ahead in any one individual match to get the momentum going on our side."

Junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) was the lone Navy player to push his foe to a fourth game. Ranked No. 75 in the country, Sawin blanked 25th-ranked Ben Ende in the third game of the No. 4 flight, but Ende ended the match with a 9-3 triumph in the fourth game.

Sophomores Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) both put up solid scores, pushing their opponents, but were never able to steal a game. Smith dropped a 9-5, 9-5, 9-6 decision to 23rd-ranked Mark Froot at No. 3, while Chris Thompson handed Zipf a 9-7, 9-4, 9-5 setback at the No. 7 spot.

Gilly Lane, the fifth-ranked player in the country, got the best of Navy's Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.), ranked #38 at the No. 1 flight. The two were teammates last fall when the duo helped represent the United States and the World University Squash Championship in Hungary. Lane defeated George, 9-1, 9-2, 9-6.

The Mids return to action Sunday when they play host to Williams College at Halsey Field House beginning at 11:00 am.
