DELAND, Fla. - After building a 15-point lead with less than five minutes remaining in the game, the Navy women's basketball team held on for a 61-56 victory over Stetson, Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla.

With the victory the Mids close out their pre-Patriot League season with a 5-9 record, while the Hatters fell to 1-12 on the season.

"A focus for us has been rebounding and limiting our turnovers and we did a good job in both areas tonight," said Navy head coach Tom Marryott. "Also, except for the very end, our defense was pretty effective throughout the game."

The two teams went into halftime tied at 29-29, then the Hatters took a 34-32 advantage early in the second half. Navy responded by scoring 19 of the next 23 points to take a 53-38 lead with 4:50 left on the clock.

Navy still held a 59-47 lead with 43 seconds left to play until Jamie Nesbit connected on a three-point field goal on each of the next three Stetson possessions to narrow the final margin down to five points.

The Mids dominated the boards in the game, hauling in 21 offensive rebounds and 48 overall caroms in the contest, while limiting the Hatters to 31 rebounds on the night. Navy also connected on 12-of-15 free throws in the game, while Stetson sank just 3-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe.

Margaret Knap (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) sank a trio of three-point field goals and finished 6-of-6 from the foul line to tally 21 points in the game, with Lindi Conner (Jr., Kingman, Kan.) adding a career-high 16 points for the Mids. Local product Carly Meyer (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) scored 11 points and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season, while also tallying four blocked shots.

Stetson was led by Nesbit's 21 points.

The Mids open their Patriot League season Saturday when Navy plays at Bucknell in a 4 p.m. contest. The game can be heard live on WNAV-AM 1430.
