ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy freshman Trey Stanton was named the Patriot League Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for his efforts in a pair of Navy games last week. The honor caps off an outstanding Monday for Stanton, as earlier in the day, he was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team. It is his third Rookie of the Week honor of the year and fourth for a Navy freshman this year. Classmate Chris Harris won the award on Nov. 20.
The 6-10 forward , who hails from Friendswood, Texas, was voted Rookie of the Week after averaging 8.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg in a pair of contests last week. On Feb. 20, he scored 12 points with seven rebounds and a blocked shot against American. Last Saturday, he tallied five points with a pair of rebounds against Colgate. During the week, he shot 40.0 percent from the field, including four-of-nine (44.4 percent) from long distance.
For the year, he is averaging 8.1 ppg and 3.9 rpg, while dishing out 33 assists, blocking 23 shots and grabbing 20 steals. He ranks second among all Patriot League freshmen in scoring. He has scored in double figures eight times this year and tied a school record (with classmate T.J. Topercer) for most points scored in his first game as a freshman when he tallied 17 in the season opener against Loyola (Md.). He was twice named Patriot League Rookie of the Week this year.
On the Navy freshmen charts, he ranks 12th in scoring (236 points), fourth in three-pointers made (36), fourth in three-pointers attempted (102), third in blocked shots (23) and second in games started (28). Earlier this year, Stanton became the 11th Navy freshman to score 200 points with 100 rebounds and with just two more blocks, he can join past Navy greats David Robinson (1984) and Dave Brooks (1981) as the only freshmen in school history to register 200 points, 100 rebounds and 25 blocks in a season.
Navy (14-15) will open play in the Patriot League on Wednesday against second-seeded Bucknell (20-8), beginning at 7:00 pm, in Lewisburg, Pa. For ticket information, please call 570-577-1000 or visit www.bucknellbison.com.
