PHILADELPHIA - Three Navy squash players won their first two rounds in the Molloy Division to advance to the premier quarterfinals of the College Squash Association Individual Championship at the University of Pennsylvania on Friday.
Sophomore Alastair Smith (Hillsborough, N.J.) opened his day by defeating Northeastern's Kurham Khan in three games, 9-5, 9-0 and 10-9. Smith was then matched up with Franklin & Marshall's Sadiq Madraswala, ranked eighth in the division. The Navy sophomore won th first-two games, 9-0 and 9-3, before Madraswala bounced back to capture games three and four, 9-4 and 9-1. However, Smith came back and won the fifth and deciding game, 9-3. He will take on Bill Hatch, who defeated the No. 1 seed earlier in the day, tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.), ranked fourth in the division, started slow against Colby's Jake Leiby, dropping the first game, 9-5, before winning the next three to move on, 9-3, 9-4 and 9-0. Mattsson was then paired up with and defeated Penn's Chris Thompson in three games, 9-3, 9-5 and 9-6. Mattsson will take on fifth-ranked Adam King in the quarterfinals to begin his day tomorrow.
Junior Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) completed the Navy trio advancing to the premier quarterfinals in the Molloy Division, winning both of his matches in three games. Sawin defeated Dartmouth's Tyler Young in the round of 32 by scores of 9-3, 9-1 and 9-1. Sawin moved on to knock off Middlebury's JP Sardi, 9-2, 9-1 and 9-3. Sawin's opposition in the quarterfinals will be Edward Newhouse of Dartmouth.
Navy's only setback on Friday came in the Potter Division, where junior Tucker George (West Hartford, Conn.) fell in both of his matches. George was paired up with 10th-seeded Jim Bristow of Rochester, and lost by scores of 9-2, 9-2 and 9-3. In the consolation bracket, George dropped his match with Franklin & Marshall's Rushabh Vora in three games, 9-3, 10-9 and 9-4.
Quarterfinals and semifinals of the CSA Individual Championship will take place tomorrow, with the finals slated for Sunday.
