ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Davidson surged to a 10-3 halftime lead and cruised in the second half to defeat the Navy women's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The loss snaps Navy's seven-game winning streak, dropping the Mids to 12-4. Davidson improves to 3-9 on the year.
"I thought we got off to a good start, but couldn't sustain it. It was a disappointing day for us," said Navy head coach Cindy Timchal. "I was disappointed in our defense. They were able to do basically whatever they wanted."
The Mids jumped out to a 2-1 lead 13 minutes into the contest, but Davidson responded with a 7-0 run over 12 minutes and ended the half on a 9-1 run for the 10-3 halftime advantage.
Navy would get no closer than seven goals at 12-5 in the second half, in dropping its second home game of the year.
The Wildcats dominated the statistics, outshooting the Mids, 33-18, including 22-7 in the second half. Davidson was also 9-of-10 on free-position shots and forced Navy into 23 turnovers, including 16 in the second half.
"They were very successful in close, and that is discouraging," added Timchal. "We have to get tougher around the goal and reduce opponent's good scoring chances. We gave up way too many today."
Amanda Towey tallied four points (1 g, 3 a), while Mary Ruttum added three points (2 g, 1 a). Elise Chapdelaine scored two goals and Erin Rawlick netted one. Natalie Blandon recorded eight saves in 35 minutes, before Vanessa Nieves stopped three shots in eight minutes.
The Mids are scheduled to compete in this weekend's Mid-Atlantic Women's Lacrosse League tournament at a site to be determined.
