• Navy Fall Invitational Results-Day One
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Juniors David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio) and Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) each shot 4-over par to lead the Navy Blue squad to a 19-over par 303 team score in the opening round of the 17-team Navy Fall Golf Invitational Saturday at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis. The Mids sit in sixth place just a stroke behind North Dakota State in fifth and seven strokes behind Delaware who sits in second place. N.C. State, meanwhile, shot a blistering 5-under par 279 to jump out to a 17-stroke lead over Delaware (296).
Four of N.C. State's players are among the top five, including Andrew Byrd (-4, 67) who holds one stroke lead over teammates Adam Hogue (-3, 68) and Hertzog Landman (-3, 68). Landman is participating in the tournament as an individual and his score does not count towards the Wolfpack's team score. Delaware's Jason Bernstein is the only non-N.C. State player in the top five. Bernstein is fourth with a 2-under par 69.
Navy, who is fielding four teams - Navy Blue, Navy Gold, Navy White and Navy Gray - in this weekend's tournament, has just one player among the top 10 and three in the top 20. While Miller and Wielgus are pacing the Navy Blue squad with their 18th-place 4-over par 75, senior Ryan Sload (Lancaster, Pa.) finished the first round with the lowest score among all of the Navy competitors with a 2-over par 73 and is tied for eighth place. Sload is leading the way for the Navy Gold team which is just a stroke behind Navy Blue in seventh with a 20-over par 304. Meanwhile, team captain and two-time All-Patriot League performer Chris Renninger (Darnestown, Md.), along with sophomore Tyler Gulliksen (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and newcomer Ben Hayes (Carmichael, Calif.) are tied for 33rd with a 6-over par 77 for the gold team.
Spearheading the Navy White team is junior John Montemayor (Woodbridge, Va.), who is tied for 25th with a 5-over par 76 with teammate John Fischer (West Des Moines, Iowa) just a stroke back in 33rd. The Navy White team settled in at 13th following the opening round with a 31-over par 315. The Navy White team is within striking distance, as it is just five strokes behind Brown (+26, 310) who is in eighth.
Finally, the Navy Gray squad, made up of three sophomores and two freshmen, is in 16th place with a 37-over par 321. Second-year team member Michael Harrigan (Moorestown, N.J.) is the team's low man of the day, posting a 7-over par 78 and placing 47th. Freshman Blaine Henning (Simonton, Texas) is next with a 9-over par 80.
The final round of the Navy Fall Golf Invitational will get underway Sunday with team teeing off between 8:30 and 11 a.m.
