ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team moved to 12-7 on the year after dropping a 9-0 decision to fourth-ranked Yale and defeating No. 19 Hamilton, 7-2, Saturday at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts in Annapolis. It marked the Mids' final regular-season home matches of the year. Navy, though, will likely have three players compete in the College Squash Association Individual Championship to be held at Navy on Feb. 29-March 2.
Navy suffered just its second sweep of the year when it dropped a 9-0 decision to the Yale Bulldogs in the morning match. Navy freshman Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) nearly pulled off the win, pushing his match against Todd Ruth to a fifth game after winning the second and fourth games, 9-3 and 9-4, respectively. Ruth, though, clinched the match with a 9-0 win the fifth game.
Three other matches were decided in four games. At No. 2, senior captain Jeff Sawin (Haverford, Pa.) evened the scored at one apiece against Francis Johnson when he won game two, 10-8. But Johnson went on to win the final two games. Sophomore Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) won the opening game of his No. 6 matchup vs. Nalshadh Lalwani, 9-4. However, Lalwani won the next three games to win the match, 3-1. Meanwhile, Navy junior Allen Harley (Charleston, W.Va.) lost a four-gamer to Michael Maruca at No. 8. Hartley won the first game, 9-3, but dropped three in a row, 9-6, 9-1, 9-5, to drop the match.
In the final match of the day, Navy earned a hard-fought 7-2 win over Hamilton which featured three five-game matches and three four-game decisions. Navy won the first three spots on the ladder fairly easily, including a 9-7, 9-6, 9-4 win by Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.), who once again played the No. 1 singles this weekend.
Both Hamilton wins came in five-game marathon matches, including the No. 4 position where Jono Peters overcame a 2-0 deficit to win the match. Navy junior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) on the first two games 9-3 and 9-7, but a 9-2 win by Peters turned the tables on Beautyman. Meanwhile, junior Rick Munschauer took a five-game match against Navy senior Brian Hamilton (Lake Forest, Ill.) at No. 7. Hamilton won the first match, however, Munschauer won the next two, 9-6 and 9-7. Hamilton forced a fifth after winning the fourth game 9-1. Hamilton won the match via a 10-8 win in the fifth.
Junior Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) found himself down 2-1 at the No. 5 spot, but he came back to win the final two games, 9-7 and 9-0, respectively to defeat Brett Morell at the No. 5 slot.
The Midshipmen will be back in action next weekend when they travel the state of New York. Navy faces No.14 Rochester Friday at 6:00 pm in Rochester, N.Y., before battling 30th-ranked Hobart in Geneva, N.Y. on Saturday at 10 a.m. and Colgate later that day in Hamilton, N.Y. at 5:00 pm.
