American Men's Soccer Shuts Out Navy, 2-0

Oct. 11, 2008

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The American men's soccer team scored two goals in a 16-second span late in the second half to deal the Mids a 2-0 setback on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The loss dropped Navy to 4-8-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the Patriot League.

The Mids played a solid first half and had a couple of strong scoring chances, the best coming off a Mike Porcelli (So. / West Islip, N.Y.) throw-in. The ball was sent towards the goal, where a Navy player got a head on it, but sent the shot just wide of the open net to keep the game scoreless.

After an even first half statistically, American started to apply some pressure, outshooting the Mids, 19-3, in the second half. American finally broke through in the 79th minute when the Navy defense committed a foul in the box, resulting in an Eagles' penalty kick. American's Phil Purdy calmly drilled the penalty kick to give American a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles would score just 16 seconds later when Anthony Moy tucked a shot into the top right corner with an assist from Purdy.

The Eagles would then run out the clock and deal Navy its fifth straight loss and seventh in its last eight games. Navy has scored just two goals in its last eight games and has been shut out in four straight contests.

The Mids have been outscored, 12-0, during the last five games.

The Mids were outshot, 28-6, and American drew nine corner kicks to Navy's one. Senior goalkeeper Nolan Grebb (Woodbury, N.J.) had a sensational game in goal, recording a career-high 11 saves.

Navy will head back to the Nation's Capital on Tuesday night for a 7:00 pm contest at Howard.
