Navy Sweeps Season-Opening Swimming & Diving Meet

Oct. 11, 2008

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Depth helped carry the Navy men's and women's swimming and diving teams to a trio of victories over Boston College, Catholic and Loyola, respectively, Saturday afternoon at the Mangione Aquatic Center in Baltimore. Between the two programs, Navy athletes placed first in 23 of the 32 events contested between the squads on the opening day of the 2008-09 regular season for each of the programs.

The Navy women's team posted a 165-135 victory over Boston College, a 252-41 win over Catholic and topped meet-host Loyola by the score of 201-99. In the men's competition, the Mids recorded a 203-89 win over the Eagles, won a 207-76 decision over the Cardinals and tallied a 135-116 win over the Greyhounds.

"We received some good swims from a number of our top athletes, but our depth really was the key for us on the day," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison. "Erika Hubbard (Sr., Madison, Wis.), our team captain, set the tone for the meet by recording a regular-season career-best time in the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle. After that, everyone else really stepped up to her challenge to swim fast."

"We are happy to open the season with three wins," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts. "Our success was really spread out today, which was nice to see. I was pleased with our effort today and am anxious for us to get back in the pool and continuing to work hard and build off of this performance."

In addition to winning both relay events, the Navy women's team won nine of the 12 individual swimming events on the day. Tara Chapmon (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.), Mallory Dietrich (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Thuy-Mi Dinh (Jr., Anaheim, Calif.) alone combined to tally eight of those individual event victories for the Mids. Chapmon won the 200, 500 and 1000 freestyle events, Dietrich won both breaststroke races and the 100 butterfly, while Dinh swept the two sprint freestyle contests. Dinh's winning time of 23.26 in the 50 free broke the Mangione Aquatic center record of 23.84.

Additionally for the Navy women's team, Allison Ranzau (So., Alpharetta, Ga.) won the 200 backstroke event Saturday, while Desiree' Robison (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) won the three-meter diving competition.

The Navy men's team saw eight of its swimmers tally at least one individual event victory during the meet. Billy Vey (Huntersville, N.C.) was the lone double event winner for the Mids on the day, with his victories coming in the 100 freestyle and the 200 individual medley events. Also posting individual event wins for Navy were Erik Hunter (So., Placerville, Calif.) in the 1000 freestyle, Jack Curran (Jr., Silver Spring, Md.) in the 200 free, Mark Meyer (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) in the 200 fly, Alex Oldenkamp (Sr., Coppell, Texas) in the 50 free, Ryan Ward (So., Prospect, Ky.) in the 200 back, Andrew Utama (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) in the 200 breast, and Adam Meyer (Jr., Bethesda, Md.) in the 500 free.

Navy's diving team also enjoyed a very successful day Saturday. Jon Galinski (Sr., Phoenix, Md.) set a new pool record in winning the one-meter springboard event, while Olaf Olson (So., Bainbridge, Island, Wash.) broke the pool standard in winning the three-meter board.

Both of Navy's teams will open their respective home seasons this coming Friday when the Mids play host to Johns Hopkins in Lejeune Hall. The women's meet between the two teams will begin at 5 p.m., with the men's dual slated to follow at 7:15 p.m.
