PHILADELPHIA - The three Navy crew teams came away victorious in their respective college eight races at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schulykill River on Saturday. The Midshipmen produced a total of six first-place times in nine different races on the day.
Navy's men's heavyweight squad produced the top time in the college eight race with a time of 13:00.2 - 38.5 seconds ahead of Drexel's second-place performance. The Midshipmen delivered the top-two clockings - 13:47.4 and 14:07.0 - in the junior varsity eight race and placed third and sixth in freshman eight race with a times of 13:58.2 and 14:20.9, respectively.
Navy's men's lightweight team also came away with a significant margin of victory in the college eight event, as its 13:16.3 showing was 22.4 seconds ahead of second-place Penn. Its freshman eight, competing in the same race as the heavyweight team, produced a second-place time of 13:54.4. The Midshipmen earned second, third and fourth-place rankings in the club eight race with times of 13:42.8, 14:14.0 and 14:19.1, respectively.
"It was a great regatta with some beautiful weather," stated Navy lightweight head coach Nick Baker. "I was truly impressed by our freshman's performance racing for the first time. They did a great job to finish in second place."
Navy's women's crew team came away with first-place times in the college eight (15:12.6), junior varsity eight (15:35.0) and club eight (16:11.0) events. Its effort in the college eight race was 5.3 seconds ahead of second-place Georgetown's 15:17.9 clocking. The Midshipmen also placed second in the novice eight race with a 16:16.2 performance, 15.5 seconds behind Penn's first-place showing.
"It was a great Navy rowing day," stated Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes. "It was a great benchmark for us, as many of the Eastern schools were at the regatta. This shows we are moving along well and are putting ourselves in a better position to be ready for the spring season."
The Navy crew teams will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 19, when they travel to the Head of the Charles in Boston.
