PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Anchored by team captain David Miller (Chillicothe, Ohio), the Navy golf team placed 12th out of 15 teams at the NSU Shark Invitational held at the Haig Course at PGA National Tuesday afternoon. After heavy rains and wind gusts caused Monday's second round of play to be canceled, Navy returned to the links on Tuesday where it turned in a 22-over par 310 in the final round for a 36-hole mark of 48-over par 624.
The Mids trailed Eckerd College and Rutgers by seven strokes heading into the final round, but were unable to move up in the standings as Rutgers (307-305--612) was 17-over in the final round while Eckerd College (307-311--618) fell in at 23-over. Meanwhile, the Mids held off Post University (323-302--625, +49) who shaved off 21 strokes from its opening-round 323 (+35).
Barry University carded a 1-over par 577 (281-296) to win the team title, bettering host and runner-up Nova Southeastern University (290-301--591) by 14 strokes. Indianapolis U. followed in third with a 17-over par 593 (295-298), followed by Lynn University (302-295--597, +21) and Embry-Riddle (305-294--599, +23).
Meanwhile, Barry U.'s Chris Carlin took individual medalist honors with a 2-under par 142 (70-72), a stroke ahead of Florida Institute of Technology's Lance Gillett (71-72--143, -1). Barry U.'s Matt Jonah, the leader after the first round, had a disastrous final round, shooting a 5-over par 77 and falling to 10th.
Thanks to a 2-over par 74 on Tuesday, Miller jumped from 39th to 24th, posting a two-round 7-over par 151 (77-74) to pace the Midshipmen. Senior Ryan Wielgus (Bethesda, Md.) slipped on the final day, dropping out of the top 20 to 38th with a 10-over par 154 (74-80). Second-year player Rob Merkert (Severna Park, Md.) made a solid move on the leader board, shaving six strokes off his first-round score to place tied for 49th with a 14-over par 158 (82-76). Senior Eric Stinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) fell in at 61st with a 17-over par 161 (81-80), while sophomore Josh Ziska (Camarillo, Calif.) rounded things out in 69th with ?22-over par 166 (84-82)
The Mids will have the next week to prepare for the their final tournament of the fall season, an Oct. 24-26 weekend at the Galloway National Golf Club.
