BOSTON - The Navy crew teams competed against some of the nation's and world's top competition at the three-mile Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday afternoon in Boston.
On the men's heavyweight side, Navy finished seventh out of 37 boats with a time of 14:53.967. The time was fifth out of 27 U.S. collegiate competition. Washington won the race with a 14:28.087 showing.
"This was a solid, well-rowed race for our crew," stated Navy men's heavyweight coach Rick Clothier. "We were able to handle the raw temperatures and rough water extremely well."
Navy's men's lightweight crew team had two boats entered on Sunday. Its eight-oared boat completed the course in 14:57.552, but was assigned a one-minute penalty that resulted in a 17th-place finish out of 21 teams, including a 12th-place mark out of 16 U.S. collegiate boats. In the four-oared event, the Midshipmen placed third among 15 entries and second out of nine U.S. colleges with a time of 16:58.478.
In the women's eight-oared event, Navy finished 26th out of 38 boats and 18th out of 28 U.S. collegiate entries with a 17:35.043 showing.
"This certainly wasn't one of our best performances," stated Navy women's crew head coach Mike Hughes. "The first half of the race went well, but we got sandwiched in between three quarters of the way through the race."
Each of Navy's crew team will return to action next Saturday when they partake in the Head of the Schulykill Regatta in Philadelphia.
