BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Navy women's cross country runner Katie Rentz (So./San Diego, Calif.) landed 43rd overall to lead the Midshipmen to a 10th-place finish out of 43 teams at Lehigh's Paul Short Run on Friday morning.
No. 9 West Virginia won the team title with 47 points, followed by Villanova's 78 points, No. 16 Baylor's 94 points, No. 12 Wisconsin's 105 points and Syracuse's 150 points to round out the top-five scores. Among the field of 43 teams, four were ranked among the nation's top 30, with two additional programs receiving votes.
Navy accumulated 292 points to finish just 14 points behind ninth-place Cornell's 278 points. The Midshipmen also boasted the lowest team score among the six Patriot League schools competing in the race - Bucknell (12th), Lehigh (17th), Army (23rd), Lafayette (34th), Colgate (39th). Navy's top-five runners finished ahead of Bucknell's second-best time and before Army's fastest clocking.
Among the field of 301 runners, Rentz crossed the finish in 21:29 to produce the best time among Patriot League runners on the day. Rentz, the reigning Patriot League Runner of the Week, produced the team's top time for the second-consecutive week. She completed the race 1:51 behind individual champion Marie-Louise Asselin's time of 19:38 from West Virginia.
Classmate Erica Ziel (Jr./Saginaw, Mich.) soon followed in 48th place with a 21:33 showing and Jess Palacio (Fr./Sun Valley, Nev.) placed 57th overall with her 21:40 effort. Kristine Mun (Fr./Nanuet, N.Y.) broke into the scoring five this week with a time of 21:51 for 71st place and Maureen Dooley (Sr./Durham, Conn.) rounded out the top five with her 73rd-place clocking of 21:53.
The Midshipmen will close out the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 18, with the Star Meet against Army in Annapolis. Race time is slated for 11 a.m., with the alumni race to follow at 11:45 a.m.
