ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Lehigh's Jim Taranto scored a goal and an assist to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 3-0 decision over Navy in men's soccer action on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Annapolis. The loss drops Navy to 4-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the Patriot League. Lehigh improved to 4-3-2 and 1-0-1 in league play.
The loss was Navy's third in a row and the Mids are 1-5-0 in their last six games.
"We gave up," said Navy head coach Rich Miranda.
Lehigh wasted no time getting on the board, scoring just one minute into the contest. Taranto netted his fourth goal of the year with assists credited to Adam Gazda and Matthew McNeil. McNeil sent a cross from the left into the box, where Gazda headed it to a streaking Taranto. Taranto slipped a shot past Nolan Grebb (Woodbury, N.J.) to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
The two teams traded chances for the rest of the first half, before the Mountain Hawks went up 2-0 in the 50th minute. Ross Burki scored his first goal of the season with an assist to Gazda. Burki gathered a blocked shot by Gazda in the box and rifled a shot into the right corner.
Lehigh added an insurance goal in the 71st minute on Kyle Evans' third goal of the season, and the Mountain Hawks weathered numerous Navy chances in the final 15 minutes to preserve the shutout.
Navy outshot Lehigh, 12-9, but managed only five shots on goal to Lehigh's seven. Lehigh had two corner kicks to Navy's one and the Mids were whistled for 16 fouls to Lehigh's 11. Grebb made three saves in goal, before Tyler Bristol came on in a reserve role to make one stop.
Navy will host Longwood on Tuesday night, beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available for just $2 and can be purchased at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Tuesday night.
