ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Lisa Kunzelman and Chris Burleson took home medalist honors in the smallbore and air rifle disciplines, respectively, to lead the eighth-ranked Navy rifle team to a sweep of three opponents on Sunday's second day of the MAC Tournament. The Mids improved to 6-0 with the Sunday sweep after doing the same on Saturday's first day of the tournament.
The Mids totaled a 2284 in the smallbore discipline, before scoring a stellar 2334 in the air rifle for a total of 4618, its second straight score of at least 4618. The Mids totaled a 4633 a day ago.
"We were a little bit off today. Not quite sure what it was, but the smallbore was just a touch off," said Navy head coach Bill Kelley, who won his 99th career dual meet on Sunday, in just his 10th year in charge. "The good thing is that we are shooting much better early on than at almost any point a year ago. I am pleased with our progress made, but we still have a lot of work to do. A 4618 is not going to cut it at the NCAA Championships. But overall, I am pleased with the start we had this year."
In the smallbore competition, Kunzelman won the event with a 577, one day after tying a career-best with a 582. Chris Burleson scored a 571, Liz Leckie totaled a 570 and Alison Lankes shot a 566, for a team total of 2284.
In the air rifle, Burleson totaled a career-best 588. Alex Karacsonyi scored a 586, Kunzelman shot a 584 and Lankes netted a 576.
The Mids will host another wave of the MAC Tournament next weekend on both Saturday and Sunday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
