BERKELEY Calif. - All nine Navy squash players defeated their opponents 3-0, as the Midshipmen earned a 9-0 victory over Cal in their season opener Friday evening in Berkeley, Calif. Navy now owns an 11-0 series advantage over the Golden Bears.
Earning their first collegiate wins were junior Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.). Langan dispatched Arbi Vartan at the No. 6 spot, 9-0, 9-3, 9-0, while McNamara did not surrender a point in his 3-0 victory over Kedar Viswanathan in the ninth slot.
Along with McNamara, team captain Christopher Zipf (Gladwyne, Pa.) swept his opponent with a 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 win against No. 7 Yashraj Khaitain. Meanwhile, in his first season as Navy's No. 1 player, junior Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) turned in a 9-2, 9-3, 9-1 victory over Dominic Gaffney. Also earning wins for the Midshipmen were Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) at No. 2, Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) at No. 3, Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) at No. 4, Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) at No. 5 and Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) at No. 8.
"I thought the team played well, especially in what was our first match," said ninth-year Navy head coach Craig Dawson, who owns a 152-68 record. "We are looking forward to our matches on Saturday, in particular our first meeting against USC."
The Mids close out their trip to the Bay area on Saturday with a 9:00 am Pacific matchup against USC, followed by a 1:00 matinee against the hosts, Stanford.
