ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy squash team pushed its undefeated streak to 11 in a row Friday evening by taking opening-day victories over Fordham (9-0), Denison (9-0) and Northwestern (9-0) at the Navy Veterans Weekend Tournament held at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts in Annapolis. The Mids have yet to surrender a game in their 11 matches this season, outscoring their foes, 95-0.

Navy opened the tournament with a 9-0 victory over Fordham, extending its series advantage to 53-0. Senior Allen Hartley (Charleston, W.Va.) and sophomores Brad Seidel (Toledo, Ohio) and Tommy McNamara (New York, N.Y.) swept their opponents, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. Meanwhile, junior Navy Ben Mantica (Binghamton, N.Y.) delivered a 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 punch against sophomore Peter Jang, while senior Michael Beautyman Jr (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) also claimed a victory having given up one point in a 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 triumph over Tyler McCoy.

While Navy turned in a 9-0 victory over Denison, the match was hard-fought by both programs. Junior Nils Mattsson (Spring House, Pa.) started things off with a 9-3, 9-2, 9-4 win over Asad Khan at the No. 1 spot. The next three matches, however, would be both entertaining for the fans and exhilarating for the players. At the No. 2 position, Denison senior Ned Marks took the opening game, 9-7, but Navy sophomore Allan Lutz (McLean, Va.) evened the match by posting a 9-1 win in game two. Marks once again took the lead with a 10-8 win in the third. Lutz, took game four with a 9-3 decision and went on to claim the match in five games with a 9-1 win in the deciding match.

At the No. 3 spot, Mantica took the early advantage with easy wins in the first two games, 9-2 and 9-1. However, Denison's Bilal Khan pushed the match to five games after taking the third and fourth games, 9-7 and 9-4. Mantica managed to earn the win with a 9-2 decision in the final game.

Hartley's good fortune continues to thrive in 2008 as he earned a 3-1 decision over Joran Diwan. Harley won game one, 9-7, but Diwan knotted the match with a 9-7 game two victory. Hartley went on to take game three, 10-8, before ending the match in the fourth with a 9-3 win.

The Mids won the final five matches against Denison by 3-0 scores, narrowing the series to a 9-8 edge by the Big Red.

"We had great support from the Brigade of Midshipmen tonight," said Navy head coach Craig Dawson, a 1973 All-American for the Midshipmen. "Their enthusiasm and spirit were a big part of our win over Denison tonight. On behalf of our team, I'd like to thank them for coming out and supporting us."

Navy made it a hat trick with its 9-0 victory over Northwestern in the nightcap. Two of the Mids' players were pushed to four games before prevailing, including junior Justin Langan (St. Louis, Mo.). The Wildcats' Will Benedict opened the match with a 9-4 win, however, Langan bounced back to sweep the remaining three games, 9-3, 9-2, 9-1.

Beautyman Jr, meanwhile, extended his winning streak this season to a team-best 11 matches. He picked up a 9-6, 9-0, 9-3 win over Northwestern senior Nathan Caro.

"We've gotten off to a great start this year," added Dawson. "We've been able to get several players involved over the last few weeks and haven't skipped a beat."

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday at 12:00 pm when they play host to Columbia at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts.
